In 1950 graduated with M.Sc. degree in Chemistry and in 1954 with Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Chemical Faculty, Technical University of Gdansk, Poland. Doctoral thesis was on chemistry of antibiotics. Postdoctoral fellowship in 1957-1960 at the Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA (director Prof. Dr S.A. Waksman).
Permanently associated with Technical University of Gdansk, Chemical Faculty, Poland. Current position: Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biochemistry, full professor. Other activities: member of Committee of Drug Research, Polish Academy of Science; Chairman of the Organising Committee of International Symposia on Molecular Aspects of Chemotherapy, held in Gdansk every two years since 1984.
In charge of the multi-disciplinary research group active in the field of Molecular Chemotherapy. Scientific interests are concentrated on the problem of molecular basis of rational design and modification of antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic agents, primarily for the control of eukaryotic systems, comprising antitumor and antifungal compounds. The research program is of interdisciplinary character and includes studies on isolation of natural compounds, structural and stereochemicals elucidation, total synthesis and modifications, molecular modelling, correlation analysis, molecular mechanisms of biological effects.
